Getting Your Restricted Licence

Shore Drive Driving School offer a completely new way of passing your practical driving test. The new driving test that was introduced in 2012 has made it a lot more difficult to gain your restricted licence. Some of the more traditional driving schools have struggled to adapt to the difficulty of the new test. Only 60% of 16-18 year olds now pass the test at their first attempt. Adrian, at Shore Drive, wants to make sure you have a better chance than that. What is needed is a flexible approach that many of the larger, franchised driving schools do not offer.

Shore Drive offer a driving instruction program and personalized driving lessons that are tailored to the individual. The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) recommend that 120 hours of practical driving is required to successfully pass the practical driving test. Now, of course, not all of that has to be with a professional driving instructor. It can be with family members or friends. But you will need professional help to start with so your safe to drive with sponsors and at the end to teach you what the test drivers are looking for and where they may fail you. There was an example just the other day of a student failing a test, five minutes into the test, because he touched a kerb with one wheel.

What the professionals at Shore Drive do is to carry out an assessment on your first driving lesson to determine what will be required for you to pass the test. They will then put forward a recommended program of  driving lessons that will give you the best chance of passing your practical driving test at your first attempt. On average, it takes around 10 hours of driving tuition from Shore Drive for Learner Drivers to pass their test. It can be as low as 6 hours for more experienced drivers. We will assess where you are at, in terms of driving ability and put forward a recommended program so you know, from the outset, what is ahead.

Every driver is different and a ‘one course suits all’ approach, as offered by some of the larger driving schools, is not what may suit you. Our driving instructors are friendly, caring and will listen to your concerns. We will then adapt our driving lessons to respect your concerns. So feel free to tell us you are worried about parallel parking or three point turns or knowledge of the rode code – we will listen and take more time to address those areas.
